Or, as in these weeks, a <strong>public\nhealth problem&nbsp;<\/strong>so great that it has deeply affected the life of every\nperson in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nature of\nhuman beings makes them reluctant to change. When a change is sudden, complex\nand out of the box, it is even more difficult to cope with it and adapt to it.&nbsp;<strong>An\nevent like the Coronavirus pandemic<\/strong>, which we can\u2019t control and cope with, <strong>can\ngenerate severe anxiety as well as psychological and physical stress<\/strong> as\nwell as create <strong>very intense emotions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>NORMAL REACTIONS BEFORE STRESS<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Polyvagal\nTheory by Stephen Porges<\/strong>&nbsp;helps us understand the way in which the nervous\nsystem reacts to the stress generated by unexpected events by defining a&nbsp;<strong>hierarchy\nof stages that corresponds to three evolutionary phases of animal biology<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>STAGE 1 \u2013 IMMOBILIZATION<\/strong>: this is the primordial and oldest biological reaction. A living being\nfacing a sudden danger becomes frozen and paralyzed. The behavioral\nmanifestations of this stage are <strong>emotional shutdown <\/strong>and <strong>functional withdrawal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>STAGE 2 \u2013\nMOBILIZATION<\/strong>: this is the most common reaction before negative\nuncontrollable events. The sympathetic nervous system reacts and copes with danger\nwith a <strong>fight or flight response <\/strong>that aims at preserving survival. So, we\ncan understand some <strong>extreme exaggerations<\/strong>&nbsp;of this period that have\ncaused the creation of borders and barriers or, vice versa, aggressive ways of\nclaiming one\u2019s rights such as hoarding food or defense weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>STEP 3 \u2013 SOCIAL\nCOMMITTMENT<\/strong>: this is the most evolved reaction that includes <strong>sharing\nchoices with other human beings<\/strong> for developing a common solution. In the current situation, the media sustain this\nmechanism. Therefore, searching for reassuring information leads us, on the\ncontrary, to run into contradictory and anxiety-inducing news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first piece\nof practical advice is to&nbsp;<strong>organize your daily routine&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 even\nemergency ones \u2013 by <strong>excluding the causes of stress <\/strong>such as drastically reducing\nthe need of getting news, using social media or navigating news websites,\npreferring only official sources. Intentionally limit having or listening to speeches,\ndiscussions and debates about topics that create anxiety.&nbsp;<strong>Increase the time\nyou dedicate to positive activities for our health <\/strong>such as reading a good\nbook, getting physical exercise, writing, being challenged intellectually and playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would be better\nthat these new routine activities were <strong>scheduled<\/strong>&nbsp;and made official\nas if they were work meetings you can\u2019t miss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>the use of paradox <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Alfred Adler<\/strong>, one of the fathers of modern psychology, introduced, in the western\nworld, <strong>the practice of Zen paradox<\/strong>, which is the ability to defeat a\npsychological negative state by focusing on it or even intentionally exaggerating\nits symptoms instead of treating them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the event of\nstress from a traumatic event, it is recommended that you take a break on your\nown \u2013 even a few minutes are sufficient \u2013 to <strong>focus on your own sensations of\nfear<\/strong>.
