{"id":4146,"date":"2020-04-09T10:47:08","date_gmt":"2020-04-09T08:47:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.termetritone.it\/?p=4146"},"modified":"2020-04-10T09:29:15","modified_gmt":"2020-04-10T07:29:15","slug":"padova-giotto-and-the-scrovegni-chapel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.termetritone.it\/en\/territory\/padova-giotto-and-the-scrovegni-chapel\/","title":{"rendered":"Padova, Giotto and the Scrovegni Chapel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With <strong>more than three hundred thousand visitors per year from all over\nthe world, the Scrovegni Chapel, painted by Giotto<\/strong>&nbsp;between 1303 and\n1305, is one of the&nbsp;<strong>main attractions of Padua<\/strong>, and the first one in\nart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Scrovegni Chapel is famous all over the world<\/strong>&nbsp;for its <strong>starred vault on an intense blue background. <\/strong>The Chapel is dedicated to Saint Mary of Charity and its walls are covered by the cycle of frescos with the stories of Anne and Joachim, Mary, Jesus, the Allegories of the Virtues and Vices and, on the wall opposing the altar, the Final Judgement that concludes the story of human salvation. <strong>The whole cycle is an art masterpiece <\/strong>and it is compared to all the other works made by the Tuscan master.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>ICONOGRAPHY<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The decorative project of the Chapel, built in 1301 by the wealthy banker Enrico\nScrovegni as a private oratory annexed to his palace, was based on the <strong>inspirations\nof the Augustinian theologist Alberto da Padova<\/strong>. Then, you will admire <strong>paintings\nfrom Jesus\u2019 life on earth <\/strong>that end with the narration of the&nbsp;<strong>Pentecost<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below those stories inspired by the gospels, there are the cycles of the <strong>classic\nfour cardinal virtues<\/strong>&nbsp;(Prudence, Courage, Temperance, Justice)&nbsp;and\n<strong>three theological virtues<\/strong>&nbsp;(Faith, Charity and Hope) that are\nopposite the <strong>seven deadly sins<\/strong>&nbsp;(Pride, Greed, Lust, Envy, Gluttony,\nWrath and Sloth) for reaching the Paradise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, the last scene of the painting cycle represents the<strong> Final Judgement\nwith the vision of Paradise<\/strong>. The art historian and philologist Giulio\nPisani reveals a detailed escaped to the previous critics and relevant to the\nrepresentations of the four beasts positioned underneath the throne of Christ as\nJudge.
