In the thermal muds of Abano Terme<\/strong>, which we have spoken about in many articles<\/a>, a new anti-inflammatory molecule has been discovered<\/strong>, produced by the bacteria which allow the extraordinary maturation of thermal mud.<\/figure>\r\n
The international scientific journal “Biomolecules” has published a study resulting from the collaboration between the University of Padua and the Centro Studi Termali Pietro d’Abano<\/strong>. The research was led by Professors Nicoletta La Rocca and Luisa Dalla Valle of the Department of Biology of the University of Padua, and the director of the Centro Studi Termali, Fabrizio Caldara. The title of the scientific paper is “Biomolecules from Alga: Biological Effect and Pharmacological Properties<\/strong>“.<\/figure>\r\n
In short, thermal mud is brought to maturity by various types of bacteria. Among these is a cyanobacterium<\/a> that transforms the surface part of the thermal mud, with its characteristic green colour. During this process, the cyanobacterium releases EPS (exopolysaccharide) molecules<\/strong> in large quantities.<\/figure>\r\n

DISCOVERY OF ANTI-INFLAMMATORY PROPERTIES<\/h4>\r\n

It has therefore been demonstrated, through in vitro<\/em> and in vivo<\/em> tests, that these molecules have powerful anti-inflammatory properties<\/strong> since they inhibit inflammatory genes, chemokines, metalloproteases and cytokines. These biochemical components have become very well-known in recent months since they are linked to inflammatory reactions caused by Coronavirus. In fact, thermal mud, thanks to the EPS molecules, acts exactly like a powerful anti-inflammatory drug<\/strong>, and moderates any excessive responses of the body to pathogens, exerting a general anti-inflammatory effect.<\/p>\r\n

This new discovery, therefore, confirms our scientific knowledge of the properties of thermal muds, which in turn has given a theoretical basis to the ancient knowledge, dating back to Roman times, of the benefits of thermal therapies in Abano Terme<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n
