With this article, we travel through time while remaining in Padua. The Palazzo della Ragione and the Baptistery of Padua are part of the cycle of <\/span>\u00a0Padua Urbs Picta <\/b>\u00a0frescoes, which have recently been added to the list of <\/span>\u00a0Unesco world heritage <\/b>\u00a0assets. The journey takes us back down the ages through “The frescoed cycles of the Fourteenth century.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Previously, the <\/span>\u00a0Oratory of San Michele, <\/span><\/a>one of the four stages of the cycle, was explored. We now shift our focus to the squares, and enter the <\/span>\u00a0Palazzo della Ragione and the Baptistery. <\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Palazzo della Ragione: the richest stop<\/b><\/h3>\n

This is the largest cycle <\/span>\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0among those from Padua that are included in the World Heritage List. The walls of the hall on the first floor of the Palazzo were completely frescoed by <\/span>\u00a0Giotto <\/b>, following the work done by the artist in the <\/span>\u00a0Scrovegni Chapel. <\/span><\/a>\u00a0The visitor does not realize the magnificence of the work until they are right inside it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The fresco includes <\/span>\u00a0343 frames <\/b>\u00a0that constitute what is defined as a real <\/span>\u00a0almanac <\/b>\u00a0of zodiac signs, symbols of professions, and human characters, designed according to the court benches of the time.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Cathedral Baptistery: one discovery after another<\/b><\/h3>\n

In 1395, <\/span>\u00a0Giusto de ‘Menabuoi <\/b>\u00a0began to create what today has become a World Heritage Site: the <\/span>\u00a0History of Salvation cycle <\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0which narrates the life of Christ and of John the Baptist.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to being important for the study of space in painting, this fresco\u00a0 has two notable distinguishing features. The first concerns the surface covered by the painting: <\/span>\u00a0every part of the Baptistery is frescoed, <\/b>\u00a0even the soffits of the arches. The second is the person who commissioned the work, in this case, a woman.\u00a0 The sensitivity of <\/span>\u00a0Fina Buzzacarini,<\/b> who wanted these frescoes, has repercussions on the feelings rendered by their story.<\/span><\/p>\n

The chapel of the Carrarese palace and its unique courteous elegance<\/b><\/h3>\n

Today the seat of the Galilean Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts, the Reggia Carrarese includes the frescoed cycle that tells the <\/span>\u00a0Stories of the Old Testament,<\/i><\/b>painted by <\/span>\u00a0Guariento di Arpo <\/b>\u00a0starting from 1354.<\/span><\/p>\n

The message is explicit: <\/span>\u00a0the salvation of man <\/b>\u00a0comes from God thanks to the intervention of Christ. An important and complex theme which is vivaciously narrated through the dimension of time is that of the <\/span>\u00a0court, <\/b>whose story is told in the choice to paint the clothes and architecture of that time.<\/span><\/p>\n
