Physiotherapy and tecar therapy: restoring wellness with personalised treatments

In an environment dedicated to healing and regeneration, physiotherapy and tecar therapy prove to be valuable tools for restoring the body’s balance. Each treatment is designed to meet the specific needs of those who wish to regain functionality, relieve pain or simply take care of themselves.

At the Hotel Tritone’s thermal medical centre, access to treatment is managed by the director, Ms Forestan. She is in charge of the admission examinations for treatment and choosing which therapies suit each guest best.

What are the differences between these two techniques and how can they improve quality of life?
To find out, we asked our expert physiotherapist Michela who talks us through these practices and outlines the therapy options available to patients alongside Ms Forestan.

What is the difference between physiotherapy and tecar therapy?

“We’re talking about two approaches to physiotherapy, but with different characteristics. Traditional physiotherapy is completely manual, while in tecar therapy, hand work is combined with the use of a specific machine. This can make a difference, accelerating results and improving the effectiveness of treatment. That said, I could never say that one is better than the other: they’re two instruments that complement each other.”

When is tecar therapy advisable and when is traditional physiotherapy?

“When I’m faced with a patient experiencing very intense pain or acute inflammation, I often start with tecar therapy. It’s particularly useful in these cases, such as sciatica, because it can calm the pain and reduce inflammation. Once this phase is over, I move on to traditional physiotherapy to work more on functionality and rehabilitation. Each patient has unique needs, so I always choose the best path for them.”

How does a tecar therapy session take place?

“The first thing I do is a thorough analysis of the patient’s condition: their medical history is crucial. Once I understand how to intervene, I decide how to set up the treatment, which can take place sitting or lying down, as required. During the session, I always try to work in a way that avoids causing any pain. This treatment is ideal for reducing contractures or improving mobility, even in post-operative or chronic cases.”

What immediate benefits can be achieved?

“Tecar therapy has a very rapid analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect. It can help relax taut muscles or improve mobility quickly, such as in the case of stiff shoulders or chronic pain. Physiotherapy, on the other hand, has a different focus: it helps improve the quality of movement by working on the balance between joints, muscles and ligaments. Both treatments bring immediate benefits and improve quality of life.”

Is tecar therapy suitable for everyone?

“Not really. With certain conditions, such as the presence of a pacemaker or certain oncological diseases, tecar therapy is not recommended. This is because the machinery generates a magnetic field that could interfere with these situations. However, manual physiotherapy is accessible to everyone, without any specific contraindications.”

How long does a physiotherapy or tecar therapy session last and how often is it repeated?

“Our sessions last 55 minutes, in which time we can work in depth and unhurriedly. It is one of our distinguishing features, because we can really customise the treatment. Depending on the patient’s situation, I often recommend daily sessions, especially in the early stages, for maximum benefit.”

How is tecar therapy integrated with other physiotherapy treatments?

“Usually, I like to use tecar therapy and physiotherapy together, often on the same day. Tecar therapy prepares the body, reducing pain and inflammation, while physiotherapy complements the work, improving functionality. I also recommend supplementing the course with thermal baths or specific massages for a more comprehensive approach. However, it is important to calibrate everything for the patient, to avoid overstretching them.”

Can you describe any cases where you obtained significant results?

“There have indeed been many cases that I have found particularly rewarding. The satisfaction of customers who return regularly is tangible proof that our work is effective. This continuity motivates me to always do my best.

What do customers say after having carried out these treatments?

“Many of my patients are people I have been following for years and what makes me happiest is seeing how they get better and how they manage to maintain a good quality of life. Already after two or three sessions they notice major improvements. They often tell me how physiotherapy has changed how they cope with everyday life, and that gives me enormous satisfaction.”

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start treatment?

“I come across people who are sceptical and may not be familiar with physiotherapy. To them I always say: try it at least once. They are often surprised by the results. The manual physiotherapy we offer here at Tritone is designed to put patients completely at ease: just let go and trust the professionals.”

Do you have any tips for maintaining musculoskeletal health?

“A healthy lifestyle is essential: daily exercise, a balanced diet and regular check-ups with an orthopaedist can make a big difference. Even those who don’t have specific problems should take care of their bodies: it’s an investment for the future.”
