The origins and traditions of Venice Carnival

Venice Carnival has very old origins: the first official edict to proclaim the festival day dates back to the 13th century, and many traditions dating back to this time are still celebrated today.

Among the most characteristic are the Carnival masks, worn to hide identity, social class and sex, and allow the wearer to take part in an illusion where, for a few days, anything can happen. Let yourself by enchanted by the splendour and beauty of the prestigious capes, bizarre headgear, ornate and magnificent figures and extreme and grotesque characters that are on display.

During Carnival, many events are also celebrated. You can attend the Flight of the Angel, the Carnival’s opening ritual, during which a maiden dressed in white descends like a dove from the bell-tower of San Marco into the Piazza below. Then there is the parade of historic costumes, during which a girl is elected as the Maria of the carnival (hence the name Festival of the Marias). For a complete list of events, you can visit the official website of the event.

You can also sample typical carnival sweets, such as frittelle and galani (chiacciere), enjoy lunch in an exclusive restaurant overlooking the canals, discover magnificent and hidden views, and climb aboard a gondola for a romantic tour at sunset.
