Sleep phases and relaxed rest: remedying insomnia with a healthy lifestyle
Sleep is the best friend of physical and psychological well-being: sleeping well is essential to feel better with yourself and those around you.
But what do we mean by ‘sleeping well’? Certainly, both quantitatively and qualitatively: the six to eight hours of sleep required by our body to function correctly may not be enough if you suffer from insomnia problems.
The phases of sleep and the importance of regular rest
Before we talk about the problem of insomnia and its possible natural remedies, it is important to understand how our ‘sleep’ works.
Sleep is composed of four or five cycles which are subdivided into five stages called sleep phases. The phases are as follows:
- 1: Falling asleep, which represents about 5% of the sleep cycle
- 2: Light sleep, which accounts for about 50% of the sleep cycle
- 3 and 4: Deep sleep and effective deep sleep, which account for about 25% of the sleep cycle
- REM phase: The intense dreaming phase, which represents the remaining 20% of the sleep cycle. The REM phase is characterised by significant brain activity, very similar to when an intellectual activity is taking place. This phase, lasting about 15 minutes per cycle, is when dreams occur.
Each stage is essential to maintain good health. Only a relaxed rest allows a smooth transition between the various phases of sleep: this is how it will be possible to enjoy all the benefits of ‘sleeping well’.
Relaxation and healthy lifestyle as natural remedies for insomnia
Insomnia is generally defined as a difficulty in falling asleep despite a state of fatigue or physiological need to sleep. Insomnia tends to occur in the early stages of the sleep cycle.
Insomnia is a problem that affects a significant proportion of the European population and is mainly caused by stress, anxiety, or environmental factors.
The remedies for insomnia are many, but the most effective ones seem to be natural: a healthy lifestyle and relaxation are treatments that are sometimes more powerful than any drug.
