Up to Monselice, cycling between the Euganean Hills and the Battaglia canal
Many guests probably already know Monselice, the fame of its castle and the unique profile of its fortress.
However, few people know that it is possible to reach this medieval town on a special vehicle that allows you to slowly savour the views of the Euganean Hills and the province of Padua.
The itinerary we propose can be travelled by bike; it is the third route in the “Viaggi Euganei” series, which has so far featured the Ring of the Euganean Hills and the cycle-tourism Giro of the sanctuaries.
Like the latter, the Battaglia canal cycle path is an easy itinerary, and is also ideal for those who don’t usually ride bikes.
Furthermore, the bikes available at the hotel are e-bikes, which offer an extra push for those who are not cyclists. Electric bikes can be booked directly at our reception, and can be collected from and delivered back to the Hotel.
So let’s look at the stops on the Battaglia canal cycle path up to Monselice.
Monteortone: the departure and the views of the Hills
It starts from Monteortone, part of the municipality of Abano Terme. The start is about 3 km from the Hotel Tritone, a distance which must be added to the distance planned for the entire tour ( 30 km ). The starting point is the bus station; from here the route continues south, leaving behind the sanctuary of Monteortone – one of the stops on the cycle tour of the sanctuaries.
Before arriving at the start of the Battaglia canal cycle path, you travel along roads that offer green views, such as of the woods surrounding the monastery of San Daniele. Moreover, cycling in this direction you can see some of the Euganean Hills on this side of the park: Monte Alto, Monte Oliveto and Montenuovo.
The Battaglia canal cycle path: the Catajo castle and Battaglia Terme
This part of the itinerary is different from the one just travelled: you leave the curves behind to take a straight and rapid path towards Monselice. One of the obligatory stops on this section of the itinerary is the castle of Catajo: it is a corner of history with extraordinary frescoes and old trees.
Continuing along the canal you reach Battaglia Terme, a small town that amazes for its ancient bridges and is coloured by the boats that are often stationary on the banks.
Towards Monselice, among the superb views of the Hills
Continuing straight along the cycle path that follows the canal, the panorama is enthralling with its exceptional views. One view is that of Villa Selvatico, which stands on the hill of Sant’Elena.
Accompanied by the sinuous line of the Hills, you then reach Monselice, which is recognized for the fortress that stands scenic and regal on the top of the hill of the same name.
Once you have arrived here, it’s time to take a well-deserved break before setting off again along the same path and returning to Abano Terme.
At the end of the journey, at Hotel Tritone, our guests can treat themselves to hours of relaxation in the thermal pool and recover their energy while enjoying gourmet dishes at the restaurant.
